Objective
To gain proficiency in performing a literature search, documenting the search strategy, selecting relevant articles, and critically appraising quantitative and qualitative research studies.
Instructions
- Topic Selection and Literature Search
Revisit your PICO question from the week one– consider making any tweaks or adjustments that were suggested by the faculty and/or other students. Refine the question until you are happy with it.
Next, using the worksheets posted as a guide, formulate a search strategy and use academic databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar. As you conduct the search, be sure to record the search strategy, including:
- Keywords used
- Date(s) of search
- Databases searched
- Inclusion and exclusion criteria
- Number of articles retrieved
- Select Articles
After conducting a thorough search, choose five peer-reviewed PRIMARY* research articles that are directly relevant to your PICO question. Ensure that your selection includes at least one QUANTitative study and one QUALitative study. All articles must be published in a peer reviewed journal and should be published within the last 5 years.
*Review the course content to be sure you understand what is and is not a primary research article
- Prepare an Evidence Table
Next, fully complete the evidence table for each of the five articles you choose (see attached). Incomplete tables will be scored accordingly – be sure to complete all aspects of the table for complete points.
- Critique One QUANTitative Article
Choose ONE quantitative article. Then, critically appraise the study based on:

- Paper Submission Requirements
After completing each of the steps above, you will combine your findings into a 5-6 page paper (using APA 7th edition for formatting and citations). The paper should contain the following components:
- Introduction (1/2 page)
- Provide background information about the topic you chose and link this to your PICO question
- Documentation of the literature search strategy (1 pages)
- Describe your search strategy in detail using the key part above
- Two separate write-ups: one for the critique of the quantitative article and one for the qualitative article (1-2 pages each)
- Review the worksheet you completed for each article – then discuss this information in the body of the paper as it relates to your question
- Compare and Analyze the Articles (1 page)
- Compare the two articles you chose – did they have similar or different findings? Were the strengths and weaknesses similar or different?
- Conclusion (1 page)
- Summarize the findings from both articles and connect the findings – did they help to answer your PICO question? Do you need additional information? Will you change your search strategy moving forward? Can you make any suggestions with this information, or do you need more?
- Include and submit the completed evidence table of the five selected articles
