A Child of the State: The Challenges

Young people deserve to be treated with respect and dignity to enable them to manage relationships in different situations. However, the majority of youths in the foster care system face many challenges that work against them achieving their goals and enjoying a normal childhood. The three videos “A Child of the State”, “At Home in the House”, and “A Child of the State” provide an insightful account of the needs of children in foster care. In addition to homelessness, lack of social connections is a major issue affecting a child of the state. Since only some youth in the foster care break out and realize their dreams, the system is a disastrous failure that leaves children defenseless and vulnerable.

Videos pave the way for understanding how the broken foster-care system victimizes children. For instance, the video “A Child of the State” is a moving account of the many challenges that affect the normal development of youths in foster care. Lemn Sissay, an award- winning playwright and poet, recounts many unpleasant memories during his 18 years as a child of the state. Involvement with the justice system is one of the challenges that Sissay believes had an adverse effect on his time in foster care. Sissay was incarcerated for a year for merely pouring three tins of paint. It implies that the foster-care system is broken and a gateway for becoming involve with the justice system.

Sissay’s experience is a sharp contrast to many other foster-care children. He had unique involvement with the justice system because the authorities never resolved the legal matter according to established principles and rules and neither did, they treat him fairly. The implication is that youth in foster care have an increased risk of early onset of delinquency.

Additionally, Sissay’s experience differs from that of other children in foster care in that he never became a repeat offender but a successful poet and playwright. Therefore, foster care is still important and in dire need of improvement.

Other videos also highlight the plight of children in foster care. The video “At Home in the House” sheds further light on how lack of social connections limit’s ability of the children to have normal growth and development. Sissay is detached from his mother at a relatively tender age. This separation denies him the opportunity to build permanent relationships with positive adults. It means that Sissay lacks the critical support that youth need to transition to adulthood in an effective manner.

Sissay had a different experience from many other youths in foster care. One of the major reasons is that his mother intended to foster him for only a limited period. Additionally, he was lucky because his social worker found him the first parents and ensured that they would treat him with dignity and respect. The suggestion is that Sissay grew up with strong connections to trusted adult supporters. The social bonds created an opportunity for Sissay to avoid engaging in antisocial behavior and pursue his childhood dreams. Foster care still offers hopes to the many Sissay’s of today, meaning that policymakers should fix the system.

Sissay has documented many videos to advocate for children in foster care. The video “A Child of the State” is a moving story of the challenges of care. As a person who grew up in care for 18 years, Sissay laments the state of homelessness among youth in foster care. According to Sissay (n.d.), 20% of those in care experience homelessness within two years of leaving. In addition, children in foster care are at an increased risk of lacking of adequate elementary and secondary education. Sissay (n.d.) indicates that a child in home care is more likely to go to prison than university. Furthermore, multiple placements do little to ensure school stability.

Therefore, the current foster care system is an impediment to proper child development.

Several factors make Sissay’s experience in foster care unique. For example, his adopted parents encourage him to pursue his dreams and provide the support needed to transition into adulthood in an effective way. In addition, Sissay knew his backgrounds and was able to trace his roots in Ethiopia. Of course, learning about his past continues to be a source of motivation, as Sissay has achieved remarkable success throughout his life.

All evidence indicates that foster care is rife with many challenges. The vast majority of youth in foster care not only face the problem of homelessness, but they also lack the support that they need to achieve their dreams. Equally significant, foster care exposes children to the risk of involvement with the justice system. While Sissay had a unique experience, the challenges call for policymakers to fix the system in order to ensure normal development of children in foster care. Increased funding provides a chance for improving foster care across the country.

  • Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses. Child Advocacy Reflection

  • Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

  • APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

  • Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

  • LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

  • Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is a 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

  • Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
