Communication Scenario Case Study (60%)
– Students will identify a communication scenario, preferably in a healthcare setting or clinical scenario, in which students or their family/friends/relatives was the service user or service providers. Communication Scenario Case Study
– Write a case study to discuss any issues relating to “communication” between the client and health care providers. The word limit will be within 1,300 to 1,500. Assessment will be based on the rubric’s criteria (refer Appendix I). Communication Scenario Case Study
You may select ONE of the following communication episodes in a healthcare setting or clinical scenario, or design your own scenario,
Scenario A:
Ms. Wong (pseudonym) is a 40-year-old lady from Indonesia. As both her mother and elderly sister were diagnosed with breast cancer years ago,
she has been working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong to support their medical expense. She can speak some keywords in Cantonese and
English and is not very fluent. Due to her family history, she is health-conscious and is a non-smoker and non-drinker. She is generally fit
and healthy and is not on any regular medication. She attended medical check-up and mammogram every 2 years. Her recent mammogram
shows suspected abnormalities on right breast, and she has a follow-up breast biopsy. She is now in the doctor’s clinic waiting to hear about
the medical test results. In this scenario, the doctor is going to inform Ms. Wong her diagnosis of breast cancer.
Scenario B:
Mr. Chan (pseudonym) is a 60-year-old chef with a body mass index of 25. He is on regular antihypertensive medication and his blood pressure is
well controlled. He was a fan of Cantonese pop, and he used to listen to music loudly through headphones before bedtime. He developed
unilateral hearing loss in his left ear ten years ago and has tinnitus occasionally. Today, he accidentally injured himself while cooking. The
hot oil splashed on his arm as he is preparing a deep-fried dish. His colleagues assisted him to hold his left arm under running water, cover
his wound and immediately sent him to the nearest Accident and Emergency Services. After triage service, Mr. Chan has been waiting
impatiently and starts yelling at the nurse. In this scenario, the nurse/ healthcare staff is trying to calm Mr. Chan down.
Scenario C:
Mr. Hui (pseudonym) is a 30-year-old divorced man. He is currently living with his elderly parents and his 2-year-old son. He lost his job five
months ago due to organizational restructuring. As a single-father and breadwinner of the family, he feels pressured and stressed. He has
been an alcohol abuser for a year and has been drinking 2-3 bottles of red wine per day. His case has been followed up by the social worker
and referred to alcohol treatment service. In this scenario, he is attending the detoxification and counselling service at the clinic with the
healthcare specialist.
Scenario D
(For students who plan to design your own scenario):
Within the introduction, you may describe the client and related circumstances of the situation. If this is a patient, you may also present the
medical/social history leading up to the events to be addressed in the scenario. (please make a remark that names and demographic information
in the essay is fake to protect privacy)
Examples of scenario may include:
e.g. caring a patient who is newly diagnosed with cancer, handling the client’s complaint, communicating between health professionals, de-escalating an angry relative
Please note that at least one person involved should be a healthcare professional, e.g. nurse, medical doctor, psychiatrist
Tips on writing up the case study
- Planning / Suggest considering (Optional):

techniques involved;
– what is/ are the relevant communication theories (e.g. Politeness theory) and/or structured communication tool (e.g. ISBAR) used;

– suggest some communication strategies to handle the situation

(1) Analyze the issues (effective or ineffective practice) observed in the case. Use literature to support your analysis.
(2) If bad practices were identified in the case study, suggest some communication strategies, and theories/structure communication tools, which can

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
