Critical Self-reflection (Module 2)

Topic Learning Outcomes assessed:

Critically examine and integrate contemporary concepts, theory and literature into current and future practice and service delivery
Construct an identity as a disability professional and apply critical reflection and change to practice and performance
This short assessment provides an opportunity to gain feedback on your reflective writing skills, APA referencing conventions and use of literature, prior to submitting your final Critical Self-Reflection Paper about the entire topic at the end of the semester.

The purpose of this assessment:

demonstrate critical self-reflection and reflexive practice
report on how your perspective/views have changed, been reinforced, questioned/challenged
You need to embed yourself and your thinking into the paper – it’s about your learning
Your paper will be assessed according to how well you demonstrate critical self-reflection and critical thinking by linking concepts from lectures, activities and discussions, topic readings and additional literature.

Choose one element of the topic so far that has been a significant learning moment for you. This could be a topic reading, a tutorial discussion, key theme from one of the modules, how you have thought about your constructed understanding and assumptions about disability, something that has challenged your thinking….

Use the DIEP (describe, interpret, evaluate and plan) model to construct the discussion about your chosen significant learning moment.

Watch the following video clip about Reflective Writing, it gives some clear and easy to follow instructions about how to write reflectively

Use the DIEP (Describe, Interpret, Evaluate and Plan) model explained in the video to construct your reflective paragraph about something from the topic content so far.
Within the Reflective Writing video clip, there is a slide which contains a visual image of highlighted text, used to demonstrate where descriptive and reflective content is evident in a paragraph. This document is a word document which describes this slide. It should be accessible for screen reader.
Remember to:

Be critically self-reflective in the paragraph: a reflection on your learning and how your values, ideas, assumptions have been challenged or changed.
Use at least one academic reference source in your reflective paragraph (cited in APA 7th edition within the paragraph). This can be a topic reading.
Provide a reference list in APA 7th edition (even if it only includes one reference source)
There is no need to provide and introduction and conclusion for this assessment.

Reference List

Add your reference list, which needs to be in APA7 format.

Here are a few tips for writing a good critical reflection paper:

Situate yourself within the paper, it’s all about you and your learning and critical reflection
Write in first person
Be honest – if you didn’t know something before that’s OK (you don’t know what you don’t know)
Write in a way that demonstrates you have engaged with the topic and be clear about:
What has challenged your thinking and assumptions about disability?
Were their times you felt uncomfortable?
Were there times you thought ‘wow, I should have known that, but I didn’t’?
Has the way you understand disability changed and how?
Has or do you think your practice will change and how?
While this paper is about your critical self-reflection, there are still opportunities to incorporate academic resources. (If you’re not sure how, watch the Reflective Writing video clip).
Review your paper to make sure you have used a clear and concise writing style.
Incorporate the feedback given in your previous assessments.
A few things to avoid:

Don’t just regurgitate topic resources and material, the paper needs to be about you and your learning
Don’t just provide a superficial overview and make statements like ‘I will incorporate this learning into my practice’. Rather tell us why it is important to incorporate new knowledge and tell us how you intend to do this. Be really specific with examples.
Don’t use colloquial language, rather use professional language. ie. avoid ‘eye opening’

  • Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

  • Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week. Critical Self-reflection

  • APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

  • Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. Critical Self-reflection

  • LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

  • Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is a 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading. Critical Self-reflection

  • Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours. Critical Self-reflection
