Evidence-Based Practice Proposal Research Paper
Evidence-Based Practice Proposal Research
Scenario Description:
You are practicing on an acute care unit in a local hospital. During your recent shifts, you identified a practice problem that you would like to see changed. After discussing the issue with your direct supervisor and the Director of Nursing, they have asked that you research the current literature and propose an evidence-based practice solution to the identified practice problem.
Instructions
From your work or clinical experience, identify a potential practice problem and formulate an evidence-based practice question. Prepare a proposal for an evidence-based practice solution that includes the following.
- Describe a potential practice problem
- Formulate an evidence-based practice question
- Locate and review two current, peer-reviewed, research articles that address the identified clinical problem
- Appraise research findings
- Propose an evidence-based practice solution
below is the feedback from my instructor. I’m lost on where to go with my paper to receive a passing score.
Thank you for submitting your second submission for this Deliverable for the NUR3643 course. All deliverable must be passed to pass the course; you have up to 3 submissions, please make your additions in red. I know it is alarming to see a “1”, but you have a great start! Please review the feedback and recommendations provided below. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Professor Trujillo.
This deliverable is challenging, so you are not alone! This time around, you chose a qualitative study, but unfortunately it is 9 years old so it cannot be used. There is some continued trouble with finding the strengths of the study design. What is listed are implications/benefits of the study. To get on the right track, here is an example- Think about how the study measured data- was it reliable? If it was this would make it a strength. One thing you can do is submit a study to show me or Professor Trujillo, and we can let you know if it is qualitative and if the date is acceptable. Or you can schedule an appointment with the librarian for help.

Or lastly, we could all meet together on Webex to help answer questions.
It is easy to see that you clearly stated and provided a detailed description of a potential practice problem. Score 4. This is a very important issue, and it was clearly stated including the significance of this issue
You provided a description of the formulated evidence-based practice question utilizing PICO(T) format. This is more than a basic description, but is need of further elaboration to achieve mastery in this section. Score 3. You have identified a nursing area of research- great job with this! You have really clarified the comparison, but making the intervention less wordy.
Rec: In the ICU, will increasing nurse staffing to decrease workload compared to a group not increasing nurse staffing minimize cost and nurse burnout?
The PICO(T) question would read as: In the ICU (P), will hiring more nurses reduce work-related stress and reduction of work overload with hiring more nurses and having a lower nurse-to-patient ratio (I) compared to a group without interventions (C) to minimize causes of stress and nurse burnout (O)?
The population is ICU nurses
The intervention is increase staffing
Comparison a group not receiving the intervention.
Outcome: to decrease causes of stress and nurse burnout
Unfortunately, there is no clearly stated summary of current, peer-reviewed, research articles that address the identified clinical problem as it was lacking in the anticipated description detail. OR To support your explanation, referenced support from valid resources are needed with in-text citation. Score 1
1.There is a great start here. It appears that you may have 1 quantitative study with the Cotrau study, but I am not able to find the full text of the study, and a link to the study was not included in the reference list.
You found a new study, Adib-Hajbaghery (2012 is qualitative, but this study is from 9 years ago, and this study should be from the last 5 years which is 2016-2021. Unfortunately, this study cannot be used either.
Jonsson, A., Segesten, K., & Mattsson, B. (2003).There is 1 sentence here, and is an incomplete summary, and this study is from 2003 which is from 18 years ago. Unfortunately, it cannot be used either
To pass this area, there needs to be 1 quantitative study and 1 qualitative studies with summaries.
One way to help you find the right type of study is to include the word “Quantitative” or Qualitative” in your library search. For example, if you searched for “Quantitative nursing study on staffing decreasing burnout” or “Qualitative nursing study on staffing decrease burnout” this can help
For QuaNtitative studies, I think of the “N” as number based. Measurements (Blood pressure Heart rate, etc), scoring on surveys/questionnaires, observations
For Quantitative studies, I think of the “L” as language. Here interviews or fill in the blank questions take words and analyze them. You will see things people actually say such as “The nurse said this …..”
2. The citing of the Cotrau study was fixed- great job with this! However, the Adib Hajbaghery was cited with two different dates. This study is too old to use, but be careful with your in-text citations
3. There are a few areas to add to this summary- see below.
(Cotrau, Hodosan, Vladu, et al., 2019) I am unable to find this study in full length. I need the link to the full study, not just the abstract. The summary does mention the type of study partially as quantitative- what kind of quantitative study was it? The sample size was listed, and this is important. There was information added to the summary, and this made it much stronger.
Adib-Hajbaghery (2012) Qualitative study- Yay!But this is too old.The study needs to be within the last 5 years 2016-2021.
Jonsson, A., Segesten, K., & Mattsson, B. (2003).There is 1 sentence here, and is an incomplete summary, and this study is from 2003 which is from 18 years ago.Unfortunately, it cannot be used.
Example of a summary: This was a quantitative study with a grounded theory approach that looked at the effect of breastfeeding education classed on the duration of breastfeeding. There was a sample size of 50 prenatal mothers who were randomized to 1/2 getting a breastfeeding class before delivery of their baby and the other half not receiving the class (Intext citation, 2020). Initiation rates were recorded after birth, and evaluated if mothers were still breastfeeding at 2, 4, and 6 months (Intext citation, 2020). . The information was collected by chart review, and survey. The results were analyzed using descriptive analysis(Intext citation, 2020). . The study found that 52% of the mothers that initiated breastfeeding at birth that had the education session, were still breastfeeding at 6 months(Intext citation, 2020).
Examples of Qualitative study: Notice that it has a description of the sample size, the methods (how the information was collected), how it was analyzed, results, and a discussion.

Example of a Quantitative study: Notice how this study has a sample, used questionnaires to measure, analyzed the results, discussed the findings

To help with your appraisal:
GAO=General Appraisal Overview https://journals.lww.com/nursingcriticalcare/Fullt…
1. How does it apply to the PICO question? Is the article directly related?
2.What type of study? Qualitative? Quantitative? What kind of Qualitative study? What kind of Quantitative study?
3.Sample size- is the sample size big enough to have meaning for a lot of people? Smaller sample sizes have less reliability.
4.Who was in the sample? All kids? All elderly? Were they from similar backgrounds?
5.Does it measure data with reliable measuring tools? How is the data analyzed?
6.Is the study credible or believable?
7.What are the study results?
8.Does it apply directly to your patients?
9.Strengths of the study? Weaknesses of the study?
Unfortunately, a summary specific to appraisal of the research findings was missing from the document you submitted. Score 1.It looks like some information was added, but the Adib-Hajbaghery study is too old to use, and the strengths listed are benefits of the study being done but not strong points of the study design itself.
This was an area where you thought about good points of the study, and that is great! However, It was mentioned that a strength was that it highlights what causes burnout and that it showed that decrease in workload lowered the stress, as well as the role practitioners play. This is important and they are benefits of the study, but are not strengths of the actual study design. There is one weakness listed, but explain why confounding variables would be a weakness?
At least 1 strength and 1 weaknesses are needed to pass this area. For example, were the studies randomized? This increases the reliability of the studies. Did the study have a big sample size? This can also increase the reliability of the study.
So look at your etext page 344 (for Quantitative studies) and 357 (Qualitative studies) for examples on how to look at limitations/weakness of study designs
Strength
1. ?
2. ?
3. ?
Weakness:
1. Did not address depression and anxiety – could this be confounding factors?
2. ?
3.?
Your explanation of a proposal for an evidence-based practice solution is more than basic, but less than the ideal to show mastery of this element of this deliverable. Score 3. This is a great idea, but a little more detail would be helpful here. For example, how many patients would a nurse have? How would the acuity/difficult factor in your recommendation? How should employers move forward?

- Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
- Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
- APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
- Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
- LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
- Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is a 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
- Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
