Global Healthcare Issue |
Cancer |
|
Description | Cancer is one of the hazardous healthcare issues that has contributed and still contributing in fatalities of many people all over the world. According to the world health organization 2018 cancer statistics globally, about 9.6million people died of cancer (Wilkinson & Gathani, 2022). However, different cancer types affect the different gender types specifically. In males, the major types of cancer that impact more deaths include stomach, lung colorectal, prostate and liver cancers. In females, the most types of fatal cancers include breast, colorectal, cervical, thyroid and lung cancers. However, about 30-50 percent of cancer death cases are preventable since they only require avoidance of various associated risk factors. Such factors may include tobacco and alcohol intake among other preventable behaviors. | |
Country | United States | South Africa |
Describe the policy in each country related to the identified healthcare issue | The cancer moon shoot policy was a program that was introduced in 2016 by the then vice president Joe Biden. It was a program that was introduced to accelerate cancer research studies as well as making introductions on further therapies to cancer patients (LoConte et al., 2018). The program was also to introduce new ways to prevent cancer. The program is of beneficial to all types of cancer thus is advantageous to many people. | The related healthcare policy is the South Africa’s Breast Cancer prevention and control policy. It was a program that was introduced to facilitate awareness creation for breast cancer care, management and prevention (Moodley et al., 2018). Women at risk of getting the disease are guaranteed clinical support by the policy as well as helping those living with the disease. |
What are the strengths of this policy? |
It is a beneficial policy to many since it covers all types of cancers in the country.
|
It is a policy that will boost the diagnosis of breast cancer. Through this diagnosis, breast cancer rehabilitation and treatment will also be enhanced. |
What are the weaknesses of this policy? | It is a program that is complex due to its nature of being costly. The case being so, the quality of research maybe as well lowered. | It is a policy that focuses on covering one type of cancer (breast cancer), despite existing many other types of cancers such as cervical and prostate. |
Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the specified global health issue. (Be specific and provide examples) | The prevalence of cancer in US has been contributed so much by excessive use of alcohol, tobacco smoking as well staying physically inactive (May, 2018). There are also some cultural beliefs from some American natives that prevent individuals from seeking healthcare services from healthcare facilities. | The prevalence of breast cancer in South Africa is so much contributed by social factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption among other unhealthy lifestyles (Moodley et al., 2018). The low standards of living as well as working environments also contribute to late diagnosis. |
How has each country’ government addressed cost, quality, and access to the selected global health issue? | The 21st century cures act that was passed in December 2016 was authorized by the congress to allocate $1 .8 billion in the cancer moon shot funding (LoConte et al., 2018). | There are numerous breast cancer centers that have been built all over the country to help manage breast cancer patients. |
How has the identified health policy impacted the health of the global population? (Be specific and provide examples) | Boosted treatment for cancer as well as early diagnosis has been enhanced. | There is an early detection of breast cancer in South Africa which facilitate its early treatment. |
Describe the potential impact of the identified health policy on the role of nurse in each country. | It is a program that aims at focusing early detection and diagnosis of cancer, thereby requiring nurses to be more keen when providing primary care and checking for any signs and symptoms of cancer. | The role of the nurse is to always been keen while determining any sign or symptom of breast cancer, ranging from mild to intense symptoms/signs. |
Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. (Be specific and provide examples) | The local healthcare facilities and organizations are greatly influenced by the global health issues. In most cases, these healthcare facilities/organizations are forced to make adjustments to their policies/programs to fit those recommended by WHO (May, 2018). When these adjustments are made, they facilitate healthcare improvement in general. | The fact that South Africa is among the developing countries, their healthcare must adjust their programs and policies to fit the ones recommended by WHO. When these adjustments are made, the healthcare organizations are positively impacted. Breast cancer which is global health issue where international organizations such as WHO helps to mitigate breast cancer in that country. |
General Notes/Comments | Cancer is among the most fatal global health issues that the American healthcare system has greatly addressed. Due to this reason, early treatment and diagnosis has helped to reduce the number of fatalities. | Developing countries such as South Africa should strive to develop strategies that strongly deal with all types of cancers (Moodley et al., 2018). For instance, they should consider setting a sufficient amount of funds as a strategy to mitigate every type of cancer. |
PLAN FOR CHANGE
Global perspective is one of the critical part of healthcare that involves the proper knowledge and understanding that healthcare and general wellness of human beings transcend all the borders, both nationally and geographically. Global perspective is an area that encompasses values such as respect, apathy and proper understanding of different diverse populations through cultural consciousness and competence. Global health policies are the programs that target a wide population without necessarily considering any geographical or international borders and hence should be advocated for by the various healthcare providers such as the nurses.
Explain how you would advocate for the incorporation of a global perspective or lens into your local practice and role as a nurse leader.
As a nurse leader, I would first engage in offering assistance towards leading change to the organization. I would also act as a role model during change implementation. Some of the qualities that I would uphold is discipline, being a person of thinking rationally and ensuring that everything I advocate for is fully supported by evidence.
Explain how the incorporation of a global perspective or lens might impact your local practice and role as a nurse leader.
Nurse leaders should always remain bold and act in accordance with global perspective to ensure proper execution of their roles. As a nurse leader, incorporating these global health issues would play an important role in increasing my scope beyond my workplace clinical setting thus helping to embrace or fight against these emerging issues. However, at the level of a nurse leader, my leadership would focus on global leadership. My nature of being visional, critical thinker and to influence and work with different people from different parts of the world would also be helpful to me as a nurse leader. As a person dealing with global health issues and a global leader at the same time, I would need a wider understanding of different cultures to help gain respect of every cultural diversity (Edmonson et al., 2017). It would also be essential for me to understand every existing connections and relationships existing globally between different cultures.
Explain how the incorporation of a global perspective or lens into your local practice as a nurse leader represents and contributes to social change. Be specific and provide examples
Through incorporation of global perspective, it means that more complexities are increased in the field of healthcare (Edmonson et al., 2017). I would therefore require to understand the diverse values, beliefs and cultures of different people to guarantee provision of quality healthcare services. For example, as a nurse leader I would be receiving diverse cancer patients requiring different cancer screenings. However, I would first be required to understand their personal needs before performing the screening based on their needs.
In a recap, global perspective is one vital area in the field of healthcare that helps to cover a wide range of population. It is an area that helps a given population living with or at a risk of a certain health condition to acquire the necessary healthcare services. For instance, cancer is a major global health issue where different countries have implemented various global health policies with an aim to mitigating the disease. Nurse and nurse leaders are among the critical healthcare providers influential in advocating for such policies due to their nature of understanding the patients’ conditions compared to other healthcare providers. Nurse leaders should therefore adopt the various existing techniques in advocating for global health issues to ensure that their practice is also positively impacted.
