Literature Search Rapid Critical Appraisal and Summary

For this assignment, you will locate two research studies related to the topic and PICOT questions that you developed in Week 2. The articles must be current (within the last five years), and one article must be quantitative, and one article must be qualitative.

Article choice is very important, therefore:

  • Articles used for this assignment cannot be used for the other assignments. The selected articles should be original research studies. Review articles, concept analysis, meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, integrative review, and systemic review articles should not be used.
  • Mixed-methods studies should not be used.

There are two parts to this assignment.

Part 1: Complete a Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklist

  • Select one each: qualitative and quantitative research articles.
  • Create a Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklist for the two research articles (one column per article).
  • Complete with brief, concise, summarized information.

Part II: Write a summary (one- to two- pages)

  • Identify differences between quantitative and qualitative designs and research methods.
  • Use current APA Style for your summary paper and to cite your sources.
  • Submit the checklist and summary.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Katherine Quintana

West Coast University

Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurobehavioral and developmental disorder that results in communication, social, and behaviour challenges (CDC, 2020). Although it is not possible to physically recognize people with ASD, it is through interaction, talking, and learning that one can identify the symptoms. Initially, physicians used to diagnose ASD separately from other conditions such as pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), autistic disorder, and Asperger syndrome (Speaks, 2011). However, they are all included in the diagnosis and are called autism spectrum disorder. Some of the weaknesses depicted by people with autism include the inability to predict behaviour of others regarding their feelings and thoughts. Also, they have executive functions disability: it is not possible to control their behaviour. The patients also lack noticing small details such as parts of an object.

Some interventions can be made to support children and adults with autism. Research shows that early intervention can improve social skills, communication, learning, and brain development process. Therapies have been used for decades as well as applied behaviour analysis. More interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder include occupational and speech therapy (Speaks, 2011). About one in every five children is likely to lose social interests, language ability, and other skills.

ASD starts early in life and affects the social life of a person. Studies show that men are three times more likely than women to suffer from autism (Speaks, 2011). Scientists argue that females have an innate resistance to genetic aspects causing autism. This theory asserts that women can live without the effects of this built-in resistance, but they can pass them to their sons. Since the boys have no protective effects, they might be infected with ASD. Autism is also genetically transferred. Research shows that parents with siblings who have autism are more than three times likely to have ASD children compared to ordinary parents.

The relevance of the Topic to Nursing Practice

Autism research is essential for people affected by ASD and for preventing symptoms. It also helps a nurse to understand the broad scope of neurodevelopmental disorders. For instance, about 30 to 60 per cent of children with ASD are likely to suffer from Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (CDC, 2020). Severe sleep problems are also common for the majority. Also, it familiarizes a medical professional with other medical and mental health disorders. For instance, epilepsy is common for 33% of the population, gastrointestinal disorders, depression, and schizophrenia.

A nurse with ASD knowledge is likely to offer a specialized level of care to people living with autism. The total cost for autism each year is estimated to be $60000 with much of the cost going to particular services. Nurses must take care of patients with self-injurious behaviours such as hitting something, biting arms, headbanging, and more. Most of the patients are unsafe, and a nurse should keep watching them.

PICOT Questions

1. Are the children born to older parents more likely to be found with autism more than children of younger parents when diagnosed after three years?

2. Are children with autism spectrum disorder more likely to experience maltreatment than children without ASD as shown by the Child Abuse Hotline at the age of 8?

3. Do parents who have relatives with autism increase the risk of having children with autism compared to parents without autism backgrounds by the age of 3?

We will process your orders through multiple stages and checks to ensure that what we are delivering to you, in the end, is something that is precise as you envisioned it. All of our essay writing service products are 100% original, ensuring that there is no plagiarism in them. The sources are well-researched and cited so it is interesting. • Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

  • Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week. Literature Search Rapid Critical Appraisal and Summary

  • APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

  • Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

  • LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score. Literature Search Rapid Critical Appraisal and Summary

  • Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is a 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

  • Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
