.Strategy Memo Assignment Rubric

You will write a memo that analyzes the problem of misperceptions on a public policy topic of your choosing (e.g., vaccinations; climate change science). For this assignment, your task will be to apply the theories and perspectives in political psychology that we have examined in the first half of class.

a)You should write the memo as a briefing to relevant policymakers, public officials, media organizations, educators, community-leaders, non-profits, law enforcement communities, or whichever audience(s) that you believe to be most relevant, given the issue and broader context.

b)The paper should:

Summarize what you see as the misperception(s) and its relationship to the policy or issue in question.

Provide an explanation grounded in psychological perspectives of the origin, pervasiveness, and persistence of this belief. Be sure to anchor on at least one underlying psychological process that may have contributed to misperceptions in this domain.

Reflect on the broader societal implications of this belief and whether or not existing efforts to correct these misperceptions (if such an effort has been undertaken) is likely to be successful or not.

Consider a potential strategy for combatting these misperceptions. Will it work? Why or why not? It’s okay to be creative and even speculative on this point, as we will cover these issues during the second half of the semester.

Use peer-reviewed, empirical sources to support your claims for the points above.
