Overview
part 1 As discussed in your readings this week, tests and measurements are all around us. A cursory review of a daily newspaper or weekly magazine will find, in one way or another, something being measured. How many of you monitor your speedometer, weigh yourself, or take those silly Buzzfeed quizzes? Moreover, measurement and testing take place in a wide array of contexts, for example from education (SAT, GRE, test scores in courses, etc.) to industry (work output, performance appraisals, etc.) to health care (length of stay, outcomes, cost-benefit/analysis, etc.) and so on. Measurement is clearly a pervasive part of our lives. But, what is the role of psychological measurement?
For the discussion this week, you will create a PowerPoint presentation. The first slide will be the title slide, including Week 1 Discussion, course number and name, and your name. The second slide will include five bullets, five words each bullet with citations from the course textbook and scholarly sources addressing “the role of psychological assessment in society.” The third slide will include five bullets, five words each bullet with citations from the course textbook and scholarly sources addressing “what purposes are served by psychological tests as they are used today?” The fourth slide will include five bullets, five words each bullet with citations from the course textbook and scholarly sources addressing “what are some concerns about the use of psychological tests and assessments?” The fifth slide will include five bullets, five words each bullet with citations from the course textbook and scholarly sources addressing “what are some ethical and legal issues in psychological testing and assessment?” The sixth slide will be your reference list.
Part 2 in a second powerpoint presentation While we are learning about what makes a good test and the relevance of specific measures, the readings this week remind us that we need to understand assessment in the context of the test-taker.
Chapter 4 of the textbook introduces the topic of culturally informed psychological assessment. This term is defined as an approach to assessment that is attuned to the role of culture in the evaluation process or the interpretation of resulting data.

The second slide will include five bullets, five words each bullet with citations from the course textbook and scholarly sources addressing “the concept of culturally informed psychological assessment.” The third slide will include five bullets, five words each bullet with citations from the course textbook and scholarly sources addressing “why is a consideration of culture so key to psychological assessment? And if it is so key, why has this factor been historically de-emphasized in the past?” The fourth slide will include five bullets, five words each bullet with citations from the course textbook and scholarly sources addressing “what are the limits of being a "culturally informed" psychological assessor?” The fifth slide will include five bullets, five words each bullet with citations from the course textbook and scholarly sources addressing “what else might you add (or take away) from the list of culturally informed "do's" and "don'ts" that is presented at the end of Chapter 4?” The sixth slide will be your reference list.
