Assignment: Transgenerational Trauma Paper
The Paper
Clients encounter burdens as well as heirlooms in their lives. We live in different systems that shape us and that need to be considered in treatment (e.g. family, school, employment, friendships, etc.). Legacy burdens pertain to what we received from our ancestors (e.g. the generations in the family valued “hard work” and the client is now highly critical of “being unproductive” and finds themself unable to relax or have a balance in life), cultural burdens acknowledge the things that affect us culturally (e.g. the country the client grew up in valued timeliness and the client is now unable to keep relationships with people who are tardy), and personal burdens (e.g. the client is unable to tolerate an angry co-worker as they grew up with a parent who abused substances and often displayed anger outbursts) are specific to the individual. The book “My Grandmother’s Hands” is a great example of multigenerational trauma and burdens.
For this assignment, students are to think of two examples of each a legacy burden, a cultural burden, and a personal burden. They are to describe the burdens and the context and depth and thereafter research trauma-informed modalities that can address the (multigenerational) concerns. Students are to outline the chosen modality (ies) and describe its application and how it can address the client’s presenting problem(s).
Moreover, students should address the effects of historical events, multi-generational trauma, and current issues on diverse cultural groups in the U.S. and globally. Lastly, the effects of crises, disasters, stress, grief, and trauma across the lifespan will be covered by this assignment.
Requirements:
- This paper will follow APA Style guidelines and will include a minimum of three (3) academic/scholarly references from 2008 to the present.
- Length and format: Minimum of 5-6 pages, not counting cover or reference pages. Typed and double-spaced. Paper and references in APA style.
