Background

The miracle question is a common technique used in SFBT. It is useful help clients think outside of the box and beyond what is towards what “might be.”

Instructions

You will need two pieces of paper for this activity. At the top of one piece, write, “My Goals.” At the top of the other piece of paper, write, “My Miracle.”

Part I: Goal Planning

Spend 5 minutes and consider what your goals for the future are. Write them down under the title, “My Goals.”

Part II: The Miracle Question

Read these instructions and spend 5 minutes trying to visualize your miracle.

Instructions: Imagine that tonight, while you are sleeping, a miracle happens. In your miracle, any problems that you are facing will get better. Whatever you want, you will be able to get or achieve. People that are difficult will change, and become easier to deal with.

But...This miracle will happen while you are sleeping. Therefore, what do you notice to demonstrate that your miracle came true. Where do you wake up the next day? Who is in your family? Do you go to school or off somewhere else)?

After you have done these two exercises, write down your reflection of the experience.

Consider these questions:

  1. What was the difference between the two experiences?
  2. Was one approach more motivating than the other?
  3. Did one approach evoke more thoughts (cognitive) or did another evoke more feelings (Emotional/experiential)?

Write a brief (1–2 page) Reflection Paper on your experience.
