Psychology Question

Psychology Question

Homework 1 : General Overview of the Task

This work requires you to be critically involved with a published behavioral study; not simply to summarize it, but to analyze it as a professional-scientist evaluating both its methodological rigor and its practical usefulness. The study you select must use a recognized behavioral assessment methodology: a descriptive analysis (e.g., ABC record, structured descriptive evaluation), a preference or reinforcer evaluation, or a brief functional analysis. His analysis must show that he can read published research with clinical intelligence, not only with academic compliance.

Task Instructions

Step 1 - Study Selection (Suggested to the Teacher: ask students to send the chosen study for approval)

  • Select a peer-reviewed study published in JABA, Behavior Analysis in Practice, or a comparable journal (within the last 15 years) that uses a behavioral evaluation methodology as its main focus.
  • Recommended starting points: Anderson & Long (2002); Lee et al. (2010); the review of Hanley, Iwata & McCord (2003); or a study identified through his own research in the library.
  • Component 1 — Assessment Procedures and Variables

  • Summarise the evaluation methodology used (e.g., structured descriptive evaluation, MSWO preference assessment, brief FA). What were the independent and dependent variables? What behavioral dimensions were measured and how?
  • Describe the operational definitions used in the study. Were they accurate enough for independent replication? Identify any ambiguity.
  • Identify the ethical safeguards reported by the authors (e.g., consent, IRB, risk analysis). What safeguards are absent or insufficiently reported?
  • Component 2 — Critical Analysis of Validity and Generality

  • Evaluate the internal validity of the findings of the evaluation: did the methodology produce data that reliably reflect the behavioral variables of interest? Identify at least two threats to validity present in the study.
  • Evaluate the external validity (generality) of the findings: to which populations, environments and behaviors can these results be generalized? What limits generalization?
  • Evaluate the social validity of the evaluation: were the objective behaviors, methods and socially significant results? Was social validity formally assessed?
  • Component 3 — Implications for Clinical Practice

  • Based on your critical analysis, under what clinical conditions would you implement the evaluation methodology described in this study, and under what conditions would you not? Be specific.
  • Identify a modification to the evaluation procedure that would strengthen its clinical usefulness or its ethical safeguards, and explain the behavioral justification of its modification.
  • Format
4–6 pages, a double space, Times New Roman of 12 pt the Arial of 11 pt, margins of 1 inch. Minimum 3 academic sources in APA 7. It requires portada y lista de referencias, pero se excluyen del conteo de páginas. No summary is required (abstract).
