Anglia Ruskin University Environmental Technology Discussion Response

Overview

please respond to Eric

Part I:

My name is Eric Shaffer. I am originally from northwest Pennsylvania. I have lived in Norfolk, Vifgina for the past couple of years. Here I work as an occupational health technician for the Dept. of the Navy at the base. Prior to this service, I worked at the Dept. of Veteran Affairs as a healthcare technician as well as serving with the local volunteer fire department and serving as a paid paramedic for another unit. My future goal is to secure employment in Occupational Safety and Health within the government setting.

I have applied for my associates in Occupational Safety and Health as I have previous applicable credits from military service. I am looking to complete my bachelors in 2024.

Part II:

There are many types of environmental technology in my current location of Norfolk. Among them, electric cars, windmills, and solar energy farms. Going one-by-one regarding health-related benefits and drawbacks:

1) Electric vehicles: health-related benefits include near zero emissions thereby saving the ozone and decreasing global warming. Drawbacks include limited mileage distances and lack of charging stations when away from urban areas. You won't find an electric charging station in my farm's area in northwest PA.

2) Windmills: health-related benefits include free energy not requiring use of fossil fuels and an almost continuous stream of some wind energy to lots of wind energy from the ocean. Drawbacks include wind farms need space to operate efficiently. Along the coast where there is little elevation, they can be an eyesore to those living here, however, the energy is generally self-sustaining and aside from delivery costs, free.

3) Solar energy farms: health-related benefits include free energy again that is continuously self-sustaining. The largest drawback of these solar farms is the increase in global warming temps. The farms in our area are of smaller scale. However, the larger, desert farms lead to increases in global warming overall. This comes with no small cost as we, as an Earth, are getting warmer and hotter as recently indicated by record mean temperatures. It further impacts the ecosystems surrounding the farms leading to further widespread droughts and loss of natural habitat for living creatures.
