Social Science Question

Overview

The readings and videos in this module examine how social structures and institutions influence society. We have further examined how Durkheim viewed the purpose of religion, and how functionalists posit that social institutions are essential to create social stability. You've read about Weber's "ironic social theory", Parson's structure of social action, Berger's social construction of reality, and Foucault's disciplinary society and their effects on society and the individual.

You are now to use this knowledge to discuss the purpose of the creation and maintenance of Indian boarding schools across the United States and Canada. How did these social institutions implement structural functionalist theory? What role did these institutions play in the organization of society? How would the social theorists that we have explored in this module (and module 1) explain these institutions? Would they have supported the creation and maintenance of these schools? Why or why not? Make sure that you specifically cite your sources from readings and video (including page number or video time) in your discussion.

Please be aware that this assignment is a case analysis using social theory concepts and perspectives that you have explored in this module and module 1. This is not a personal opinion editorial. Your seminar paper should be 5 - 7 pages in length, double-spaced, 12 point font, using APA format. Once you have posted your essay in the drop box, please then copy it in the discussion form. You will not be able to access the discussion forum until you have submitted your seminar paper here.
