Chinese media

Overview

1. Discuss media commercialization in China by addressing all of the following questions. What does media commercialization refer to? When did it happen? What changes did it bring about, focusing on its impact on media production and state-media relations in China in the 1990s?

2. Chinese media organizations, whether state-owned or private, all need to deal with political control, profit imperatives, and various public sentiments and audience preferences. Choose one from the following examples to illustrate this delicate balance that needs to be achieved for a media firm to survive and thrive in China: investigative news media, Ximalaya FM, iQiyi. Note that you have the option of choosing a different media firm for analysis. You might find this option desirable if your final research essay is to focus on the same firm.

3. Some say that the Internet presents a serious challenge to the Chinese government by reducing its control over media and information and by giving its people an unprecedented amount of freedom and power to express themselves. Others argue that the Internet has become just one more tool of the Chinese government for ideological control, surveillance, and promoting consumerism. Both accounts are unsatisfactory. Provide your own argument about how we should understand the political implications of the Internet and social media in China.
