As noted in Chapter 5.2:
Both a values-based and compliance approach are necessary elements of maintaining an ethical corporate culture. Ethics has been characterized as “doing the right thing” and serving as a motivational force that influences professionals’ values… Compliance is related to influencing behaviors to act in accordance to the law or face consequences… Studies show that ethical and compliance approaches are interrelated and work best to motivate and sustain lawful and ethical behavior in organizations.
In other words, ethical organizations will adhere to both the law and trying to do the right thing.
Please review Chapter 3.3 and Chapter 5.2, then choose two companies from the most current list in Chapter 5.5. (Find the list under Honorees at the top of the page.) Search online to locate the companies’ ethics and compliance pages (e.g., 3M) and summarize the companies’ key initiatives. Identify them as ethics-based, compliance-based, or a mixture of the two. How do the companies’ ethics-based initiatives align with the values described in Chapter 3.3? Compare and contrast the initiatives at the two companies to identify common themes and different approaches. [MO 5.1, MO 5.2]
