The two indicators to being a successful student to me is the definition of "grit", being passion and perseverance, leaning more on perseverance. Taking this class for example, I don't have a large passion for math like I do for other things, but I'm determined to consistently put in the same effort every day to earn the grade I want. Something that stood out to me was Angela's comments on the ability to learn, and failure. Angela refers to Dr. Carol Dweck's idea of "growth mindset", which is the "belief that the ability to learn is not fixed, that it can change by your effort". Dr. Dweck proved that children learning about the brain and its growth when challenged led to a much higher perseverance rate in response to failure. Another thing that stood out to me was Angela ended that point by saying "...failure is not a permanent condition", which can be implemented in every aspect of our lives. Considering the elements of "grit", one thing that I can do to be "grittier" in this class is willing to accept failure, but not letting it be that "permanent condition". Another thing I can do is look at the big picture, instead of just the end of this class. To be clearer, Taking this class puts me ahead in my academics, which inches me closer to my career, that is where my passion lies in hand with my perseverance.
