Chapter 13 Discussion

After reading the chapter and the notes, go to the link of the California Penal Code that is located in the module.

- Find a law, any law, in the California Penal Code that prior to looking at it, you had no idea it was illegal.

Now discuss whether or not you believe it's fair that a person may not be held accountable in a court of law for committing such act, if they claimed they didn't realize it was illegal.
Discuss how your opinion relates to the ignorance or mistake of law discussed in the chapter and how ignorance or mistake can negate Mens Rea.
What if you are the victim? Do you really care that the person who victimized you "didn't know" about the law? Does it matter how serious the crime in question is?
