  • Printing pictures or image printing began in China around the 9th century during the Tang Dynasty. The method of printing images was originally done using woodblocks. These early prints were created by carving an image into a block of wood, applying ink to the block, and then pressing it onto paper or fabric. The earliest known surviving examples of printed pictures are from the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) and even earlier, as printing techniques were refined.
  • Printmaking itself developed in China during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), but it truly flourished and spread to Europe in the 15th century, with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 1440s. Woodcut prints in Europe became widely popular during the Renaissance in the 15th century, particularly for religious texts, illustrations, and maps.
  • Different types of Printing- Woodcut: An image is carved into the surface of a block of wood. The areas that remain uncarved are inked and pressed onto paper. Wood Engraving: Similar to woodcut, but the image is carved into the end of the grain of a piece of wood, rather than along the side. Etching: A metal plate is coated with a waxy substance. The artist scratches an image through the coating, and the plate is then dipped in acid to etch the design into the metal. Lithography: A method using a stone or metal plate. The artist draws an image on the surface with a greasy crayon or ink. The plate is then treated with chemicals to allow ink to adhere only to the drawn areas. Stencil: A method in which the image is created by applying ink or paint through a stencil.
  • Key Printmaking Terms- Proof: A test print taken during the printmaking process to check the image before creating the final edition Edition: A set of prints made from the same plate or screen Press: The machine used to transfer the inked image from the matrix to the paper Matrix: The surface used to create the print, such as a wood block, metal plate, or screen Mass Production: Printmaking allows artists to create multiple copies of the same work, making it more accessible to a wider audience Artistic Expression:Printmaking allows artists to experiment with new techniques, materials, and styles
