Printing pictures or the development of printing technology began in China in the ninth century. The Technique included woodblock printing, later refined and spread to other parts of the world, influencing the art and communications methods of the time.
The type of printing is Relief printing where the artist carves away parts of a surface like wood so that the raised area creates the image when inked and pressed on paper ( like a stamp)
intaglio printing where the artist cuts or etches into a metal plate. ink is applied to the plate and then wiped off leaving ink only on the lines
Lithography- they use a flat stone or metal plate. they draw an image with a greasy substance, and then the pate is treated so that the drawn area attracts ink while the rest repels it. the ink image is then transferred to paper
Screen printing- aka silkscreen printing, you create a stencil on a screen then push ink through the screen onto fabric. this is how many people make T-shirts.
printing terms are
Plate: The surface on which the image is created
Edition: a set of prints made from the same plate or screen each considered original
Proof: A Trial print was made to check the quality of the image
Registration: The process of aligning the paper and plate to ensure the image prints in the correct placement.
There are many reasons why artists make prints and some are Multiples, it allows them to make multiple prints of the same image making it more accessible and affordable.
they print for experimentation offering unique techniques and effects that can't be achieved with other art forms and They like to try different print methods to express their ideas in new ways.
