As I read thoroughly through Chapter 17, I happen to feel that criminal law isn't as effective as it should be. I happen to feel this way because criminal law doesn't necessarily prevent or deterrence crimes. Which criminal law may cause some kind of fear or second thoughts to a person(s), it wouldn't necessarily be entirely capable of preventing that crime from being committed. I know this because people have different perceptions upon criminal law. For example, if a couple of teenagers are stealing from a gas station and only one of them are caught and face the consequences for stealing, it wouldn't necessarily result in the rest of the teenagers never stealing again but would likely figure ways to avoid themselves from being caught as easily. Therefore, the different perceptions upon criminal law are significantly similar to the example I provided above from my perception because it likely only results in people figuring out ways not to be caught as easy or in the same way that the person before them was. In addition, people may not even truly fear committing the crime but would likely fear getting caught in the same way as someone else. Though it is logical that people may not want to face the consequences of their crimes, these thoughts won't always stop or prevent the crime from being committed.
However, I happen to believe that committing a crime cannot be guided away from regardless if a person knows logical right from wrong. Which committing a crime is a personal choice of action and can necessarily be founded of being committed in the moment or being planned ahead even if they've been guided in the right steps. Though I feel that sources of moral guidance would be self awareness. I feel this way because only the individual who is committing that particular crime could've made the choice themselves not to commit it and could've prevented themselves with a simple use of self awareness. Which a person should be capable of respecting the law and having no intention of causing harm or committing the act of crime. Therefore, people should definitely practice maturity and learning to become self aware in situations such as decision and choice making rather than placing themselves within a criminal life. Although people may refrain from some things, people are likely to refrain from things because they're illegal but may also refrain because they have no intention of causing harm or committing a crime which would only put their lives in jeopardy in regards to success and having a noncriminal record while also avoiding the lifestyle filled with negative aspects and consequences that isn't worth facing.
