In Chapter 19, we discussed the general rule of defense of others.
- For this post, discuss whether or not you believe a person is justified in using force in order to protect a third party. Discuss whether or not you believe it depends on certain factors. Some examples to think about are:
- What is the relationship between the people (ie. husband and wife)
- The situation (in public or in a more private setting)
- Whether the aggressor is using a weapon
- The person being attacked is a child, a woman, or handicapped?
- What if the aggressor is mentally ill? Should the third party wait for someone with mental health expertise? Is that even possible in certain circumstances?
- Should they just call the police? Then are the police justified in using deadly force to protect the third party?
