I believe that this type of situation depends heavily on the actual situation at hand and how it's going down as it has a lot of different factors that can make any party of the involved situation either lawfully correct or wrong. Say it's between a man and a wife and the man is using a weapon of sorts such as a knife or even a gun to threaten and harm his wife. If the wife's brother happens to be at the scene, say in a private home, then I believe that he would absolutely be in the right to step in and even use deadly force if he believes his sister is in danger.
But if we flip the script around and say it's set out in a public spot, with a pair of teens dating one another and a mutual friend is with them. Say the girl says something mean but not generally abusive to her boyfriend and the mutual hits her to “Protect” the guy, then I think it's unjustified and just an assault on the girlfriend. Situations like this are much more uncommon but unfortunately, still happen as some people have different ideas of what justice is and that's why it leaves these third-party situations up in the air until a judge oversees the entire situation and makes a statement accordingly.
Now say we're in a situation at school where a handicapped student is being bullied by another student. If Student A is bullying the handicapped student, Student B should be allowed to intervene at an equal level to protect the handicapped student even if the bullying isn't physical. It’s a situation that has a hundred different outcomes because the situation itself can have a hundred different ways of forming, so it ultimately is a call that should be left up to whoever is judging the situation and usually should be based on morals more than anything.
