Murder is when a person unjustifiably killing another person. A precise legal definition of murder depends on jurisdiction and the distinguishment between different degrees of murder such as first, second-, and third-degree murder. Murder is historically defined as killing another human being with malice aforethought such as intent-to-kill murder, grievous-bodily-harm murder, felony murder, and depraved heart murder. Depending on the state, the Attorney General may seek life in presentment without parole or see the death penalty. Murder is not the same as homicide (the killing of an individual by another individual) or manslaughter (a homicide without premeditated malice).

Manslaughter is the act of killing another person without malice. Manslaughter was divided into voluntary and involuntary manslaughter. Voluntary manslaughter is if they caused a homicide due to a severe provocation. They must have responded to this provocation in “heat of passion” before they could calm down. Involuntary manslaughter involves an unlawful but unintentional killing of another person. A prosecutor must prove that the defendant acted with negligence or recklessness in causing the death. Sentencing may vary on the severity of the case whether it is voluntary or involuntary manslaughter.

John Wayne Gacy aka the Killer Clown, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz aka Son of Sam, the Zodiac Killer, Charles Manson and the Manson Family, Ed Gein aka the Plainfield Ghoul, Dennis Lynn Rader aka the BTK Strangler, Angelo Buono and Kenneth Bianchi aka Hillside Stranglers, and Rodney Alcala aka the Dating Game killer are all premeditated murderers. The serial killers mentioned have multiple motives as to why they kill their victims. Most of these killers have different motivations such as anger, criminal enterprise such as a gang or mafia, financial gain. Ideology, power or thrill, psychosis, or sexual. A scenario of voluntary manslaughter is a crime of passion could look like when a husband and wife argue because the wife cheated. The argument becomes so heated that the husband pushes the wife, who then hits her head and dies. An example of involuntary manslaughter is if a man or woman drinks at a bar, decides to drive and on the way, they run over or crash into someone and they die.
