Overview
part 1) After you do the Collins reading in the week 4 folder answer the following
Q1: Have the degree requirements for jobs increased or decreased from the 1930s to 1960s? Give statistics from the reading to support your answer.
Describe a situation where you or someone you know were required to have more qualifications than necessary for a job. Did you feel it was fair? Why or why not? Try to be concrete by explaining, for instance, whether the types of skills needed to do the job really changed over the years.
Once you have posted your answer, you can read other people's posts and you should reply to two of other posts, noting for instance what your classmates have been able to draw your attention to or in what ways their post increased your understanding.
Part 2) Functionalist theory says that there are two forces at play (proposition 1) that explain why the proportion of skilled jobs in society increase:
(a) the same jobs (for instance being a nurse or factory worker) are more technologically advanced compared to decades ago
AND (b) some low skilled jobs disappear, and high skilled jobs are created with technological advances.
1) Look at this government website about the fastest growing jobs in the US: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/fastest-growing.htm
Pick one occupation and explain why you think that there is a growing need for them now in society (i.e. what has changed to make that occupation needed)
2) Think about the job that you have or would like to have, how has it changed?
3) Do you think that AI can replace/change the job that you want or have? Why or why not?
