Overview
Use word-processing software to describe your use of the preparing skills in advance of first meetings in the following four case scenarios. In other words, demonstrate how you would apply the relevant preparing skills (preparatory reviewing, preparatory exploring, preparatory consultation, preparatory arranging, preparatory empathy, preparatory self-exploration, centering, and preliminary planning and recording) in these particular situations. Please label each of the preparing skills you use in each case situation.
a. You serve as a community organizer in a low-income, high-crime area of town. A large percentage of the community is unemployed; neighborhood gangs patrol the area; drug sales and drug use are widespread; and teenagers and adults engaged in prostitution operate openly on the streets. You want to help members of the community organize themselves to address these concerns and improve their neighborhoods. You hope to recruit a team of community members to provide leadership. Toward that end, you invited a number of residents along with representatives from various groups and organizations. You reached out to several concerned parents, two ministers, a priest, a rabbi, an imam, and a representative from the local secular humanist association. You also invited a school principal, three teachers, two other social workers, two social service agency directors, a community relations police officer, one local state legislator, two members of the city council, and a neighborhood specialist with the mayor’s office. Almost all have agreed to come to an organizational meeting on the following Wednesday evening. You have arranged for the use of a meeting room at a neighborhood church. Use word-processing software to demonstrate how you would use relevant preparing skills in advance of the first group meeting.
b. You serve as a social worker in a mental health center. Earlier in the day, a woman tele phoned your agency and said she wanted to talk with someone about a recent incident. She said that about a week earlier, she met a man in a bar. He drove her home and then raped her. At first, she thought she could manage the aftereffects of the crime on her own. However, she now realizes that she needs professional help to cope. During the telephone conversation, she said, “I’m falling apart.” You have an appointment with her in a few hours but have some time now to prepare. Use word-processing software to demonstrate how you would use relevant preparing skills in advance of the first meeting with this new client.
c. A police officer called your social services agency to say that she is bringing in a family of six (two parents and four children who range in age from less than 1 to 7 years). They had been sleeping in their dilapidated Chevy in a rest area on the highway. The officer said that they appear hungry, thirsty, and exhausted. Use word-processing software to demonstrate how you would use relevant preparing skills in advance of the first meeting with the family.
d. You are a social worker who specializes in work with both victims and perpetrators of child sex abuse. In 2 hours, you are scheduled to meet with Mr. T for the first time. He has been charged with the crime of molesting the 13-year-old daughter of a woman friend. Out of jail on a bail bond, Mr. T’s lawyer advised him to contact a helping professional right away and begin to receive counseling. Use word-processing software to demonstrate how you would use relevant preparing skills in advance of the first meeting with Mr. T.
