1. In my opinion, most criminal justice policies focus on punishing people for crimes instead of stopping crime before it happens. For example, tough laws put people in jail for a long time, while programs like community policing and menta health support try to prevent crime by helping people.
2. The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 caused a lot of moral panic and led people to call for stricter gun laws. Lawmakers proposed new rules to make background checks tougher and limit access to certain guns. The laws made after Sandy Hook felt more like a quick fix to calm everyone's fears instead of truly fixing the real problems with gun violence. They wanted stricter gun laws, but they didn't take into consideration other factors like mental health support. This reactionary approach may have led to laws that didn't truly prevent violence or address the root causes, just adding to the fear without making real changes.
3. I believe that we have made improvements in things like better community policing and increased awareness of racial issues. But I believe that there is still problems with things like racial disparities, high incarceration rates, police violence, and not enough support for mental health.
