How do labels shape a person’s behavior and identity?

In my opinion I that labels can have a strong effect on people's lives and how others see and treat them. For example, if you keep calling a person a thief over and over then that person might believe in what he or she is being called and started being a thief. I would also like to say that people live up to the way others see them.

Can labeling someone as a criminal increase the likelihood of future criminal behavior? Why or why not?

Yes, because calling someone a criminal so many times will just make them do the crimes and limit their opportunities and people will have negative perceptions of them. Once a person has a label on them it will be hard for them to find a job, housing, and even education. Because of this they might just turn to crime just to live. If people just continue to label them as criminals, in their mind they think that there is no need to change if that's what people think of them.

What are some real-world examples of how labels impact individuals in society?

I have a personal real-world example. When my parents first was looking into buying a home in Victorville, I remember when we went to look at the home the relator who was showing the home ask so where are you from? My dad said Compton and she looked said oh. This made us feel like she was stereotyping us. Another one would be when kids grow up in the projects are labeled poor kids or at risk kids. This can lead to people seeing them as troublemakers, low expectations of them in school, likely to drop out of school, or struggle in life. By people labeling them they might not get the same treatment as other students. Teachers might not push them to do their best. This can make it harder for the kids to stay focused and motivated.
