criminal response

Overview

  • Why do you think public order offenses (like drug use, gambling, or disorderly conduct) make up such a large portion of juvenile arrests? Juvenile offenses such as drugs, gambling and unruly behavior can be attributed to influences such as Peer pressure, Curiosity, Poor role-models and Media. Campaigns such as "Say No to Drugs" aren't really useful because as it turns out When you tell people not to do something, They're going to do it anyway. Especially when the consequences are not taught. Kids also partake in activities counter to Societies expectations because they are trying to find themselves in the world. This can bring them to Negative behavior.
  • In your opinion, should the juvenile justice system focus more on punishment or rehabilitation for youths who commit these offenses? Why? This is a slippery slope, Interviews I have had with Ex-cons and People with a Unruly child past have stated Jail and Prison only teaches people to be better Criminals. I can differently see this as a Negative and why I say NO. Depending on the Severity of the Crime (Murder being and exception) Juveniles need instead of harsher sentences be allocated to Community service and Rehab, Children should be corrected not by iron bars but by Empathy and Showing them the harm of their actions and how they can help correct their behavior through being members of the Community. Programs such as Law enforcement and Police Experience, I believe would be fantastic for them.
  • Do you believe that chronic offenders and violent offenders should be treated differently in the justice system? Explain your reasoning with examples. Yes, there should be a distinction between Chronic and Violent offenders, both offenders should be brought into rehabilitation but treated differently based on the Severity of Crime. Violent Offenders need extra attentive action applied to them to help curve their more serious behavioral problems. These could be Anger management and Psychiatric evaluations and help. Chronic offenders aren't all bad people but have the propensity to offend, this could be actions such as Steeling which can be a form of kleptomania, Drug addict, delinquency. Chronic offenders such as Drug addicts should be treated as Victims and not just "Criminals". Chronic offenders need Rehab as most have Habitual problems that require intervention. Correcting them and educating their offenses can help us see better results.
