Overview
Question 1
In past discussions in this class, students have brought up the observation that the role of a CMO has changed into one that is more active and attentive to social media. This suggests a new consciousness in the C-Suite. I believe the pandemic forced this revelatory approach, as the pandemic affected everyone in the global market.
A concept to consider in the application of new technologies or patterns is the "meme." A meme is a behavior or belief that can be replicated and can be quite specific (Blackmore, 1999) or, on the other hand, can be quite general. How CMO's approached their marketing strategies in the past became memes. They might also be called traditions. The marketing memes would take on a distinctive look dependent on accepted protocols and guided by costs, customers, resources, vision, and returns.
With the pandemic, memes changed, primarily out of necessity. As they become common, they can be repeated and adapted as market conditions change.
As our class discussion noted, CMOs are now more likely to accept social media and apply it in vigorous attempts to establish market superiority.
As you add to your ABs and knowledge of marketing, why not make a note to capture the change in marketing memes from pre-pandemic times and the reasons why?
