I'm 98% positive we all know someone in the industry who has been working either as an independent contractor, commission stylist, establishment owner, or employee. Contact them and ask these (and more if you'd like) questions to get their opinions and views on their chosen employment situation.
- How long have they been in the industry and what aspect of Cosmetology do they focus on?
- Are they an employee, independent contractor, commission stylist, or salon owner?
- Have they always been that or have they worked in more than one way?
- Which work type did they start out with after Cosmetology School?
- Why have they chosen the path they have?
- What advice do they have for you, just starting out in the industry?
- Have they ever had to refuse service to anyone?
- Why and how did they handle it?
- Looking back, would they have done anything different in their career?
After the interview, write up their responses and share your opinion of their chosen path in this industry. Does it seem like a likely path you will take? What of their career would work with your lifestyle? What would you do differently?
