Photography

Overview

For this assignment, I chose to imitate the style of Dorothea Lange, one of the most influential American photojournalists of the 20th century. I was drawn to her because her photographs go beyond aesthetics—they tell powerful human stories. Lange’s work during the Great Depression, particularly her portraits of migrant families, shows how photography can be both art and social commentary.

The dominant characteristics of her work that I tried to capture include:

  • Focus on people: Lange often centered individuals or small groups, highlighting emotion in their faces and posture.
  • Emotional connection: Many of her subjects make direct eye contact with the camera, creating intimacy between viewer and subject.
  • Use of natural light: She preferred available light, which gave her photographs a natural, documentary quality.
  • Minimal distractions: Her backgrounds are usually simple, allowing the viewer’s attention to remain on the human story.

To imitate her style, I photographed an ordinary person in a natural setting, using only ambient light. I emphasized the expression and presence of the subject rather than the environment. I also framed the shot simply, without added props or distractions, so the viewer could focus on the person and their story.
