One image that stood out to me from the reading was "Jackie in the Hospital, Crying" by Donna Ferrato in 1984. The subject is centered in the image and is a close up shot of her crying face. This image jumped off the page for me as she is seen in such a raw moment, filled with emotion. Donna Ferrato titled her photo "Jackie in the Hospital, Crying" for a project geared towards domestic abuse awareness. This context makes the image more powerful and allows the viewer to connect to the subject and empathize with the photo. The centered, close up shot allows a connection and "sameness" between viewer and subject and makes the photo extremely successful in evoking empathy towards the cause of domestic violence awareness. The use of black and white creates a serious tone and helps portray the feelings of sadness and hopelessness that victims of domestic abuse so often encounter. I was so inspired by this photo that I looked into the full project. Every photo of hers within this project was shocking, emotionally charged, and successful in evoking strong emotions surrounding domestic abuse awareness.
