SOC 303

Overview

Write a survey of at least 15 close-ended items/questions related to your topic.

This is my topic How the Lack of Supplies and Quality Teaching Affects Children’s Ability to Learn and Education in the United State. My target audience are teachers and students in middle schools.

You should have at least one set of items in matrix format (what Google calls a "multiple choice grid." These are used when you have a series of questions that follow the same pattern. These may not literally be questions, they sometimes are statements where you ask about agreement/disagreement.

Before beginning to write or select your survey questions, create a list of at least two concepts that you intend to measure with the questions on the survey. Describe those concepts in the same area where you submit your link to the form. Also consider what demographic or other items you should include based on reading you have done.

The survey should be intended for administration to the general public as a face-to-face interview (if you wish to design a survey for a specific population, please see your instructor). The questions and layout of the survey should reflect the fact that you will be reading them out loud to the respondents.

You need to pay attention to the general principles of writing good questions that have been discussed in class and in the text book.

After thinking about the questions, create your survey using a Google form. https://youtu.be/6DTVKmjos_g?si=sgSO3NtWT8D5gFUiAn overview of the process is here. (There are many advanced features in Google forms that are not covered in the video.) Make sure to notice that "mulitple choice" items mean that respondents pick one answer. Checkboxes mean they can "check all that apply."

You may also wish to use questions from a previous study, the GSS or another source. This is fine (and even a good idea), but make sure you include a citation to the original source.

Spelling and grammar are especially important here since mistakes can add to confusion for respondents and make your survey seem unprofessional. Read your survey out loud before handing it in and change any items that don't "speak" smoothly or comfortably. It will also be worthwhile to review Guidelines for Writing Questions (course documents) before you begin and check them again when you have a complete draft.
