From the gangs and drugs PowerPoints, I learned a lot about how deeply connected gang involvement and substance use really are, especially in communities where people feel limited or unsupported. The presentations explained that gangs often use drugs not just as a way to make money, but also as a method of control, keeping members dependent, loyal, and tied to the lifestyle. What stood out to me the most was how many different factors can push someone toward joining a gang, like unstable home environments, peer pressure, wanting protection, or even just wanting to feel like they belong somewhere. I also learned how early exposure to drugs can seriously derail someone’s future, affecting their ability to stay in school, hold a job, or maintain healthy relationships. Another major takeaway was how gangs tend to target people who feel isolated or vulnerable because those people are more likely to latch on to any sense of acceptance or security.
I’ve seen something very similar happen in my own family. My cousin grew up without my uncle because he passed away due to gun violence when my cousin was still young. That loss created a huge gap in his life, and even though our family tried to support him, it was clear he struggled with not having his dad around. When he reached adulthood, he made the decision to sell all of my uncle’s show cars that meant a lot to our family and used the money to buy a motorcycle so he could join a gang. Ever since then, he’s been wrapped up in that lifestyle, and he missed a lot of family events because he obligated to constantly show up for the gang. Seeing this happen firsthand made everything in the PowerPoints feel very real, and it showed me how grief, lack of support, and the desire to belong can push someone into dangerous situations that end up pulling them even further away from the people who care about them.
