Why Hymns remain well known
by Jack Henriquez
I think Psalms tunes and hymns like "Old Hundred" are still well known today because of their simplicity and memorable. they're very easy to sing and the melody is very straightforward so even people who don't like to sing or aren't the best at singing can pick up the song pretty easily. that is makes hymns so effective as source of music and collective sound. Whether it's for worships services, church choirs, or even school choirs, it's the perfect song for communion and building a sound of one voice. I've been a Christian my whole life and have grown up in church and although I definitely don't know every hymn and psalm, I definitely feel a deep connection with a few of them and so does the modern church congregation. I feel a big part of this is the way hymns are still integrated with modern Christian songs and worship music. Amazing grace is incorporated into the bridges and choruses and many modern songs to create that familiarity with modern Christian music especially with the older people in the congregation who don't really give newer Christian music a chance. Some of my personal favorite worship songs incorporate these hymns seamlessly into the melody of the song. Some of my favorites include: I WAS BUT, God by Elevation Rhythm, The Blood by Bethel Music, and Mercy by Elevation Worship. I also think a huge reason hymn are still relevant is the comfort they bring. In the same way that they are easy to sing they are also very simple in meaning. They represent their lyrics perfectly and if someone is in their feelings, singing along to a hymn is a great reminder of a greater meaning.
