Part I:
My name is Kent . I have fifteen years’ experience in the occupational safety and health field. I have a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health and a master’s degree in industrial hygiene. Both degrees were completed at the University of Central Missouri. I am a Certified Safety Professional through the Board of Certified Safety Professional and a Certified Industrial Hygienist through the Board of Global EHS Credentialing. Throughout my career, I have worked in insurance, coal mining, food manufacturing, tissue paper manufacturing, cement manufacturing, and pesticide production. Higher education has always made me challenge my norms and assumptions and I am looking forward to this throughout my pursuit of this degree and participation in this course. While striving to obtain my doctorate, I am looking to expand my knowledge base and hopefully make substantive additions to the occupational safety and health field that drives the profession forward in the realms of either human and organizational performance and/or utilization of artificial intelligence. I live in Olathe, Kansas with my wife and three children.
Part II:
When implementing a companywide program, the research and justification for the program must be sound and grounded within the capabilities of the organization. Before making a change, I would want clear and consistent case studies regarding the scientific justification of the research that not only shows repeatable methods of measurement but similar conditions and environments as the organization that I am proposing the change to. In a case study by Al-Otaibi & Kineber (2023), they found that barriers to implementation of safety programs include poor governance such as unclear guidance, lack of safety knowledge from personnel and leadership, hostile work environment caused by lack of funding and support, and finally, unsupportive industry norms regarding the type of industry and the workers have an impact on the acceptance of the program. This study illustrates the challenges that are seen throughout industry regarding the acceptance of programs. To implement a companywide program, leadership must establish a clear link to the needs of the organization, but the program needs to educate and influence the organization’s culture to ensure the change is consistent and impactful. The difficulty of implementing a program or making a change highlights the overall importance of performing thorough and comprehensive research to ensure acceptance. While there are often numerous articles and studies that have been performed to aid in determining different controls and methods to mitigate exposures to slips, trips, and falls, often I find it difficult to transition these to actionable items that can be understood by the personnel within the facilities. We need to ask ourselves not only what the research supports but how do we simplify the messaging down into something meaningful and actionable for all levels of the organization? In a bibliometric study by Mahat, Neupane, and Shrestha (2025) focused on performing a comprehensive examination of OSH research from 2014 through 2024, their research found that, in the time examined, the domain is growing internationally with significant contributions by various groups and countries. Analysis of the studies over that time found key thematic areas included occupational health nursing, disease, construction safety, risk assessment approach, and management strategies. This bibliometric study shows that a larger emphasis is placed on performance of research, but also that some of the key focus areas, including management strategies, show that finding effective methods to influence organizations is just as vital as understanding occupational risks.
