Hi, I am Steven, and work as the District, Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator for Alamo Colleges District, San Antonio, TX. Also, I am married with 3 young adults and 1 middle schooler.

I am currently enrolled in the Doctor of Occupational Safety and Health program and pursuing this degree for several reasons. The first reason is the safety field is always evolving so I love that no day is the same. The second reason is being employed by a higher education institution, the degree completion will automatically increase my salary.

Taking this course will assist me to learn from others in the field and possibly take ideas and improve process. Eventually, degree completion will assist in leading my family into their advanced degree. I can say, “if I can complete a doctoral program, you can too”.

Part II:

To begin with, I would start with statistical facts, such as according to the National Safety Council reported falls are the second leading cause of workplace fatalities, accounting for approximately 16% of all occupational deaths. In 2023, there were 725 fatal falls to a lower level (Helbock, 2026). Another fact about slip, trip, and falls (STFs) is that they caused over 240,000 nonfatal injuries requiring days away from work in 2024, with similar numbers projected for 2025, (Helbock, 2026). In addition to providing proven research, I would explain exactly how implementing the new global program will positively impact on our footprint locally and globally. Everyone would hear the vison behind the change and why and how change will impact them at the individual level. Unfortunately, societal norms tend to steer towards asking oneself, “what’s in it for me”.

Another approach would be addressing culture change. Behavioral change is significant, nearly the top challenge in the workplace, from leadership norms to fair decision making and the list goes on. The relative health of your business culture will either support you in achieving results in difficult times or act as a barrier, a hindrance and an obstacle that denies innovation or change Atkinson, P. E. (1990). Ultimately, due to proven research and rigor taken the new change is now a must and not optional. Thus, urging and leading employees for their buy-in.
