OLET1105-MODULE 1 reflection 250 words

Overview

Write 250 words on the following introductory e-book chapter:

Parasecoli, Fabio. Food: Identity and Diversity. In Goldstein, Darra and Merkle, Kathrin (eds.), 2005. Culinary Cultures of Europe : Identity, Diversity and Dialogue. Strasbourg, Council of Europe; 11-37. You can find the article in the Reading List section in the left-hand menu. (due time & date)

Follow the guidelines below:

  1. In your answer, focus on two sections from the list below (write 125 words on each section), highlighting one main theme or idea that you found most interesting in each of the two sections:
  • Eatymologies
  • Food debates
  • Body politics
  • A Global restaurant
  • Immunities and communities

You will note that the section "Hungry Powers" (pp. 28-9) is not included. This is because I have written a model reflection below on this section, as a guide to what is expected of you:

Hungry Powers

Parasecoli builds on the intriguing notion of food as a political weapon. I was fascinated by the notion of overindulgence – and its physical manifestation in “full bodies and visible bellies” (Parasecoli, 2005, p. 29) - as a sign of wealth and authority amongst royal figures in history. This contrasts with today’s rejection of people deemed to be overweight or obese by a society that disturbingly celebrates thinness to the point of encouraging disorders such as body dysmorphia and anorexia.

Tips for success:

  • Your reflection will be assessed. It needs to cover two sections (name your sections), NOT including Hungry Powers, and must also contain a bibliography.
  • DO NOT include assessment instructions in your reflection post.
  • You may choose any referencing style. Follow the University's library guide to referencing and citation styles (https://www.library.sydney.edu.au/support/referencing).
  • Submit your work as either a Word document or a PDF file. If we cannot open your file or if Turnitin does not accept your file, you will receive 0.
  • Note and adhere to the word limit.
  • Although your reflections are marked on content rather than on English expression, it is hard to consider writing as outstanding if the English expression is poor. Please check your spelling, grammar and punctuation before submitting.
  • Familiarize yourself with different types of academic writing, how to structure your work, and how to acknowledge your references correctly. This section will help you. You can also access the University's Learning Hub. Studiosity is another way to receive 24/7 same-day feedback on a writing draft
  • Check the rubric below for further details.
