After reading Chapter 2 and listening to the podcast, I understood mise en scène as everything you see on the screen that helps tell the story. It's more than just the actors. It includes the setting, lighting, costumes, props, and even where the actors are standing. I think all of these details work together to create the mood and help the audience understand what is happening without everything needing to be explained through dialogue. It made me realize that every detail in a scene is there for a reason.
I also learned that because the movie screen has a fixed frame, directors have to be very careful about what they choose to show. Since they only have a certain amount of space, they have to decide what is important enough to fit inside the frame and what should stay out of it. The camera angle, where the actors are placed, and what is happening in the background all help guide the audience's attention to what the director wants us to notice.
One challenge with the fixed frame is that it doesn't change size, even thought every scene is different. Directors have to figure out how to fit everything into the shot without making it look too crowded or leaving out something important. They also have to make sure the audience stays focused on the main parts of the scene. Reading this chapter made me realize that there's a lot more planning behind every shot than I ever noticed before, and it gave me a greater appreciation for all the work that goes into making a film.
