Realism and formalism are two different ways filmmakers choose to show a story. Realism tries to make everything feel natural, almost like real life. The lighting, acting, and settings are usually subtle, and the filmmaker doesn’t draw attention to the camera. It’s meant to feel like you’re watching real people in real situations. Formalism, on the other hand, is more stylized. Directors use dramatic lighting, bold colors, or unusual camera angles to shape how the audience feels or understands the scene. Instead of copying real life, formalism creates a more artistic or exaggerated version of it. So, realism focuses on life as it is, while formalism focuses on how the filmmaker wants you to see it.

Deep‑focus photography is when everything in the shot both close and far away and stays sharp and clear. A filmmaker might use this to let the audience notice more than one important thing happening at once. It makes the whole scene feel connected, and it can add realism because it mirrors how we naturally see depth. It can also be used creatively to show tension or relationships between characters or objects in different parts of the frame. Basically, deep focus gives viewers more freedom to explore the scene.
