Hi Everybody,

Cutting to continuity is an editing technique where the editor puts together different shots so the action feels smooth and natural, even if the clips were filmed at different times. The whole point is to make the cuts basically invisible so the audience doesn’t get pulled out of the moment. For example, if a character is running down a street, the editor might switch from a wide shot to a close‑up or a side angle. As long as the character’s movement, direction, and speed match between each shot, it feels like one continuous action instead of a bunch of separate pieces. This style is super common in most Hollywood films because it keeps the story easy to follow and makes everything look clean and realistic.

There are five main editing styles, and each one is classified by how it handles time, space, rhythm, and meaning in a film. Continuity editing focuses on smooth, realistic storytelling where the audience always knows what’s happening. Classical cutting is more about emotion and narrative, cutting to reactions or important details to make the scene more dramatic. Montage uses a bunch of short shots to show time passing or to create symbolic meaning, like a fast-paced training sequence. Deep‑focus editing uses fewer cuts because everything in the frame is in sharp focus, letting viewers explore the scene on their own. Discontinuity editing intentionally breaks the normal rules with jump cuts or mismatched action to create a jarring or stylized effect. Each style has its own purpose, and filmmakers choose between them depending on the tone and message they want to create.
