Hi Friends,

Narratological is a theory that provides a framework for analyzing how stories construct meaning across different media. Narratology is the systematic study of narrative, mechanics, and techniques that shape a reader or a viewer's perception. Rather than focusing solely on what a story is about, it examines how the story is told. It deconstructs the relationships between the underlying chronological events and the specific way those events are organized and presented to the audience. By analyzing how a story functions, how its plot is organized, and how it constructs meaning for the audience.

Film narratology differs significantly from literary narratology due to the mediums' inherent tools. Literature relies entirely on written language, requiring readers to mentally reconstruct spaces, voices, and appearances. Conversely, cinema is multimodal medium that uses visual composition, editing, camera movement, and sound design. While a novel might spend pages describing a character's internal anxiety, a film can convey it instantly through a tight close-up or a discordant musical score.

Christopher Nolan's Memento is a premier example of how structural delivery alters a story comprehension. The film uses a fractured, reverse-chronological structure to mirror the protagonist's short-term memory loss. By placing the audience in the same state of confusion as the main character, the narrative structure forces viewers to constantly re-evaluate what is true. If told chronologically, the movie would be straightforward, predictable mystery, but its unique structural delivery transforms into a profound psychological thriller about subjective truth.

Finally, mimesis and diegesis represent the two fundamental ways of delivering a narrative, original conceptualized by classical philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. mimesis refers to "showing" or imitation, where actions are acted out directly before an audience, as seen in theatrical plays or live cinematic performances. Diegesis refers to "telling" or narration, where a narrator recounts actions, describes events, and provides commentary from a distance, which is the traditional method used in conventional novels.
