Orion is one of the brightest constellations in the night sky. It was named by the astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD. It’s named after the Hunter in Greek mythology. Orion has two of the brightest stars in the night sky, Rigel and Betelgeuse. Orion is recognizable by many cultures around the world and it also has numerous myths associated with it. The story behind Orion in Greek mythology is that he is a supernatural hunter born to Poseidon. He once made a threat he would kill every animal on earth and this enraged Gaia. Gaia dispatched a scorpion to stop him. This is why the constellations Orion and Scorpius are never seen together in the sky at the same time. I chose Orion because it is very popular and growing up I remember hearing and seeing Orion’s Belt in movies. In the movie Men in Black it is an important part of the story.
