Step 1
The concept of Latitude and longitude is used to identify the earths points or locations. Latitude measures from north to south, and longitude measures from east to west. The way to calculate the positions are by using the coordinates Degrees, minutes and seconds, in conjunction with Decimal Degrees. Navigators and Oceanographers use the Haversine equation to calculate distance between two points.
It can be difficult to map a spherical object onto a flat map. The Mercator Projection has advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is it is good for navigation directions. The disadvantage is that as you get closer to the poles there maybe some distortion.
The Goode Homolosine projection also has advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is it reduces distortion as compared to The Mercator Projection. One of the limitations are that the oceans are split apart. Oceanographers have more difficulty with this aspect.
The Robinson is another map style that is very common. But like the other styles, it too has areas of distortion and elongation, as well as disproportions.

Step 2
The video I selected from YouTube shows a lot of different styles of maps and how they each have limits and advantages for both Oceanographers and Navigators. In the video it does compare the styles I mentioned above and how each one alters different aspects like distance area and shape. In Oceanography it is important to have the correct awareness of space, since that may be crucial in the study of oceans, currents and also navigation. By studying the different maps and styles, you can see why they would be so important to Oceanographers and Navigators. If I were using a map, no matter how I was traveling, by air, land, or sea, I would want it to be accurate and trustworthy. Maps with huge distortions would not be useful.
