What is the Universe? - NASA Science

Selected Goal: Recall the age of the universe, the solar system, and Earth

For my example, I chose NASA’s article “What is the Universe?” because it demonstrates the goal of recalling the age of the universe, the solar system, and Earth. According to NASA, the universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old, while Earth and the solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago. NASA explains that scientists can estimate these ages by studying the ages of the oldest stars, measuring the expansion of the universe, and studying radioactive decay in materials found on Earth and in asteroids. I thought this was interesting because Earth is much younger than the universe. It also shows how scientists can use evidence to learn about events that happened billions of years ago. This connects directly to our lesson because understanding the ages of the universe, solar system, and Earth helps us understand the enormous amount of time involved in Earth’s formation and history.
