Understanding the Sociological Imagination

Overview

Theme 1 Assignment

Understanding the Sociological Imagination

Sociologist C. Wright Mills coined the term "Sociological Imagination" to describe the ability to perceive the connection between an individual's subjective experiences and the broader society. Our Sociological Imaginations enable us to differentiate between personal problems (troubles) and public issues. With this in mind, address the following questions:

  1. Define and describe what C. Wright Mills meant by the concepts of personal problems (troubles) and public issues.
    • In your response, consider how Mills' concepts apply to various social phenomena. Reflect on the significance of distinguishing between these two concepts in understanding social life.
  2. Provide examples to illustrate the distinction between personal problems and public issues.
    • In addition to examples cited in sourced material and current affairs, use examples from your own life or the lives of people you know to highlight this distinction. This personal connection will help illustrate the practical application of the Sociological Imagination.
