Community and Public Health Nurse

Overview

Discuss the role of the public health nurse in a specific setting. Based on your assigned chapter and bearing in mind the primary prevention focus of the community/public health nurse, respond to the following: What differentiates the role of the community and public health nurse from other health professionals? What skills and knowledge are necessary for the type of decision making inherent in population-focused nursing practice? How do these skills differ from those required in the institutional setting? Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.

Community and Public Health Nursing: A Practical Distinction

Community nursing commonly describes care delivered to individuals, families, or small groups in settings such as homes, clinics, and schools. Activities may include follow-up, health education, referrals, and direct care within the nurse’s role.

Public health nursing places greater emphasis on the health of populations. Examples include prevention programs, immunization initiatives, surveillance, health education, and work to reduce barriers to health. The two areas overlap: a nurse may support an individual’s follow-up while also helping connect people with wider community services.

Role titles and responsibilities vary across employers and jurisdictions, so use the definitions and scope guidance relevant to the setting being discussed. For academic work, support role-specific claims with current professional nursing sources.
