Initial information: For your response posts to at least three of your classmates' initial posts, address the following:
How might your classmate use a resume building skill they did not describe in their initial post within a professional environment? Share any recommendations you have about how best to use this skill, including your own personal or professional experience with this skill, if you are comfortable doing so.
What is another professional organization your classmate might be interested in? How do you believe this organization could help them further their career?
- Respond to a classmate who outlined a different ethical framework than yours. What are the key similarities and differences between the frameworks? How do the different frameworks apply to the different career paths?
- Student1- For me the assignment that most fits my resume building skills is project one. In this project we looked at proper revenue recognition, internal controls and separation of duties. Currently I work as a Corporate Collections Director but would like to eventually be the Director of Revenue Management. This position takes a more proactive approach to AR in that it is responsible for revenue recognition, internal controls, setting policy and ensuring the highest profitability for the organization. In this position I would ensure that revenue is recognized ethically and in a way that most benefits the organization. I would be dealing with all AR, not just over 120, like I do now. I would also oversee the person in my current position.
- The ethical framework that would apply specifically to my position now and in the future would be integrity and professionalism and due care. When dealing directly with revenue and receivables there are many opportunities to make "slippery slope" decisions to improve optics. Before I make any decision, I ask myself if I could justify it to an auditor. One current example is when we have to stop collection attempts because all efforts have been exhausted and we deem something uncollectible, it needs to be written off which effects the overall profitability for the company. A way to avoid this is to credit memo the balance off the invoice and call it a discount. These only effect the job's profitability. But it isn't honest and if I had to answer to an auditor, it wouldn't be good.
An organization that I would like to learn more about is the Texas society of CPA's. It is a society for CPA's and accounting professionals here in Texas and for members they offer a free mock CPA exam.
Student 2-Hi Everyone,
I hope to participate with y'all in future classes. In my opinion, the module 5 project best demonstrated the resume building skills for this course. It required research, and critical thinking, highlighting the importance of ethics at a transactional level. All people in an organization are under pressure to perform, and this project showed there aren’t any shortcuts and the importance of one's character while conducting day-to-day business. In a professional environment, setting realistic goals and monitoring progress should help align expectations with results.
The professional organization I’d like to learn more about is the Institute of Management Accountants. The programs and professional resources available through them will help further develop my knowledge and skills. The AICPA code of professional conduct outlines the performance approach needed. This framework will be a great resource if I’m ever in a situation where questions of independence, integrity, and objectivity are raised.
Student 3-Good Evening Class,
Yes, we did it!!! congrats all.
1- What are the assignments (or what is one singular assignment) that best demonstrate your application of the Resume Building Skills for this course? Why do you feel these are the best representations of your development of these skills?
The assignment that best demonstrates my application of resume-building skills is the ethical decision-making project involving the sales manager scenario. This project required me to use an ethical decision tree to analyze the implications of the request, sharpening my critical thinking and reinforcing the importance of integrity in decision-making. Additionally, writing the executive summary enhanced my ability to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively, which is crucial in finance and accounting. I also gained valuable insight into the importance of whistleblowing policies, recognizing how they protect employees and uphold ethical standards. This assignment exemplifies my development of critical skills essential for my future career in finance, making it a standout experience for my resume.
2- How might you use one of these skills in a professional environment? If you are currently using or have used one of these skills in a professional environment, include this information in your post.
In a professional environment, I would use my critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills to navigate complex situations that involve ethical dilemmas. For example, if I were faced with a request that could compromise the integrity of financial reporting, I would apply the decision-making framework I learned from the ethical decision-making project. This would enable me to assess the implications of the request, consider the interests of various stakeholders, and ultimately make an informed decision that upholds ethical standards.
3- What professional organization would you like to learn more about? How do you believe this organization will help you further your career?
I would like to learn more about the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). As a leading professional organization for certified public accountants, AICPA offers a wealth of resources that can significantly enhance my career in finance and accounting. By becoming a member, I would gain access to a wide range of continuing education opportunities, including webinars, workshops, and specialized training programs that keep me updated on the latest industry standards and regulations. Additionally, AICPA provides networking opportunities with other professionals in the field, allowing me to build valuable connections and learn from their experiences. The organization also offers resources for career development, including job boards and mentorship programs. By engaging with AICPA, I believe I can deepen my expertise, stay informed about emerging trends, and ultimately advance my career as a finance professional.
4- Choose an ethical framework within the accounting industry that connects to your future career path and discuss the importance of these guidelines for that career.
An important ethical framework in accounting that connects to my future career is the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct. It focuses on key values like integrity, objectivity, and confidentiality, which are crucial for building trust in the industry. These guidelines are essential because they help ensure that accountants make honest decisions and avoid conflicts of interest. As I pursue my career, following these standards will guide my actions and help me build trust with clients and colleagues, promoting a culture of transparency and accountability.
