SEC 10-K Filing of Nestle

Purpose

This project will require you to use Excel and Word to analyze the SEC 10-K filing of a manufacturing company.

You will need to:

  • Identify the key financial statements in the 10-K filing.
  • Calculate and analyze relevant financial ratios.
  • Write an executive summary that describes your findings and provides insights into the company's financial performance.

Task

Use the same selected manufacturing company from the prior unit.

Download the company's SEC 10-K filing from the SEC website.

Open the 10-K filing in Excel and identify the key financial statements: balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement.

Submission

Using the Excel template, calculate the following financial ratios:

  • Profitability ratios: gross profit margin, net profit margin, return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE)
  • Liquidity ratios: current ratio, quick ratio, cash ratio
  • Leverage ratios: debt-to-equity ratio, times interest earned ratio

Using Word, write a report that summarizes your findings and provides insights into the company's financial performance. Your report should include the following sections:

  • Introduction: Identify the company and its industry. Provide a brief overview of the company's business model.
  • Financial Statement Analysis: Present the key financial statements and calculate the relevant financial ratios. Analyze the financial ratios and discuss any trends or patterns that you observe.
  • Conclusion: Summarize your findings and provide insights into the company's financial performance.

    Criteria for Success

    • When analyzing the financial statements, be sure to consider the company's industry and size. Different industries have different financial ratios that are considered normal.
    • When writing your executive summary, be sure to explain your findings in a clear and concise manner. Avoid using jargon that your audience may not understand.
    • Proofread your report carefully before submitting it.
